The Latest Advances in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Meeting

I travelled to Boston for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting- to bring the latest plastic surgery news TO YOU!

The conference ended last week after almost a week of meetings- so this is the absolute latest information on Plastic Surgery!    I thought it was an excellent meeting in that there seems to be endless  unproven technologies, techniques and products advertised- and I was hoping – and succeeded to clear the mud on what is proven to work and what is not.  Also- there are some exciting new technologies and products on the horizon in Plastic Surgery.   So what’s on the horizon?

Topical Botox….you know the saying…no pain – no gain. But when topical Botox comes out- this will no longer hold true.   I was excited to learn that topical Botox REALLY IS coming.  At first I thought it was going to be something that we apply at home- which is a pretty scary thought when you think about it.  Can you imagine- get the dose wrong and you’ll look like the joker.  But NO- it will still be applied in a doctor’s office – which I think is a good thing.  The real benefit will be – that it won’t hurt- and there is no chance of bruising.  There are some downsides though…What is a downside of topical Botox?  With injections in multiple areas it’s really quick and only takes a couple of minutes…whereas the cream takes longer- it takes 20 to 30 minutes for absorption.   Also the studies are only being done in the crow’s feet area around the eyes where the skin is very thin…we don’t know how effective it is in areas of the face where the skin is thicker such as the brow area and bunny areas of the nose.  Also, we don’t know about using Botox in other areas where Botox may be more likely to migrate such as the eyebrow area.

- Bottom line:  further studies need to evaluate the absorption capabilities in different parts of the face which have different thickness and the migration issue- once the drug gets through the skin- is it going to stay where you want it to…But topical Botox is coming and looks like it will be approved for the crow’s feet or under the eye area.

Another exciting product on the horizon promises to reduce the appearance of ugly scars.    I’m really excited about the prospect of scar less surgery….there is a product out right now that helps scars heal faster…it is a silicone gel sheeting…so what I mean by faster, is your scar will look like it is a year old at only 3 months…but the exciting product that is being studied right now- that is on the horizon- is a topical ointment that by the before and after pictures at the meeting- it practically made scars disappear.   This new product- is a topical ointment that is applied only 4 times over a 2 week period…on problematic scars…which are called hypertrophic scars, not keloid scars, that would not have improved with conventional methods.  The results were astounding!  The new topical ointment did not eliminate the scars but SIGNIFICANTLY improved them leaving the scars NEARLY indistinguishable.

- The mechanism of action is that the growth factor involved in making ugly scars isinhibited by this drug.  On the other hand, the mechanism of action of the silicone gel sheeting is unknown.

Listen to my archived radio show discussing this topic during my May 12th show under the “Radio” tab.  Too fabulous to miss!
