Your Most Important Accessory

I know, SKIN doesn’t sound as exciting as the “Latest Must-have Hand Bag.”  But when you really think about it, skin (followed by hair) is your MOST important fashion accessory.  Your skin goes with you everywhere and you never hear anyone say, “Did you see how amazing Jennifer looked?  Her handbag made her look drop dead gorgeous?”  No, it is Jennifer’s skin, hair and make-up that make Jennifer glow.  Fortunately, if you’re having a bad hair day, a fabulous hat or scarf can help hide the hair, but if your skin looks like a lizard, even the greatest makeup can’t make your skin look vibrant. And your hand bag is unlikely to save the day.

The number of products on the market for skincare can make anyone’s head spin.  If you find this topic as exciting as watching paint dry, and can’t read any further, then trust that all the  products found on are some of the best brands on the market backed by REAL scientific research. You will find these brands in the offices of plastic surgeons and dermatologists because they also believe in the scientific research behind these products. Products that are found in regular Retail stores may have some of the same active ingredients, but a much lower concentration or with no skin absorption capabilities.   Products found at are physician grade skin care products that have a much higher concentration of the active ingredients and must be applied carefully; but, they are also very effective!   If you want to “flesh” things out a little more, please let me give you some highlights (not the hair kind) on what you should know about skincare:

  • Skin Cancer:  The Bottom Line –Wear Sunscreen!  I feel like I’m beating a dead horse when I say “Wear Sunscreen” because the ads are everywhere.  But since this is the most critical factor in keeping skin healthy, I can’t skip it.  Apply sunscreen to your face and the back of your hands as part of your daily routine and you won’t get unexpected exposure.   If you absolutely hate the way sunscreen feels on your face or if sunscreen tends to make you break out, try “Journee” (my favorite) made by Neocutis.  Journee is an SPF 30+ with Zinc Oxide in it along with PSP (processed skin cell proteins) hyaluronate and anti-oxidants, including vitamins C, E and melanin.   It’s a fabulous anti-aging day cream, a potent antioxidant blend sufficient for protection from oxidative stress in conjunction with a SPF 30 sunscreen; it is 2Di4!
  • Active ingredients:
    • Latest and greatest:   Processed Skin Proteins (PSP.) This ingredient is exclusive to Neocutis and is the newest generation of a blend of proteins which include a large variety (18+) of identified Human Growth Factors, Cytokines and Interleukins.  PSP is rich in proteins, which are critical to wound healing and effective skin rejuvenation.
    • Vitamin C:    When taken orally, a very small percentage reaches the skin, so you must apply this vitamin topically.  Vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic Acid is a superstar antioxidant proven to increase fibroblast activity and stimulate collagen production and can also help with age spots or hyper pigmentation.  Cellex-C  has the technology and patent on a delivery system that stabilizes the Vitamin C and delivers the L-ascorbic Acid along with L-tyrosine and Zinc, which work perfectly together to prevent the breakdown of collagen and stimulate the production of collagen in the skin.
    • Vitamin E:  Topical Vitamin E needs to be in the DL –alpha-tocopherol or tocopherol acetate to make a positive difference in your skin.  Ideally, you should use Vitamin E in conjunction with Vitamin C- because Vitamin C works on the water soluble free radicals in the skin and Vitamin E works on the lipid soluble portion.
    • Vitamin A (retinoid, retinol, retinoic acid):  Topical Vitamin A ( Retin A was the first ) works by stimulating growth factors, but can be irritating to the skin.  I was one of the first to jump on the Retin A band wagon when I was in my twenties (20 years ago.)   Soon after, a dermatologist diagnosed me with “Rosacea.”  I spent several months taking antibiotics to treat my Rosacea and didn’t learn that it was the Retin A causing my “Rosacea” like symptoms until I didn’t refill my prescription for Retin A.  Bottom Line:  Valuable skin nutrient, if you can tolerate it.  I prefer to get my growth factors from Neocutis.  (And I’m not sponsored or supported by Neocutis in ANY way.)
    • Vitamin B3 – Niacin:  Pro-Niacin as found in the Nia 24 skin care line facilitates the delivery of Niacin deep into the skin, where it helps to stimulate DNA repair and build the skin barrier from the inside out.  I’ve been using Nia 24 products for years; they are 2Di4!
  • Sleep and Exercise:  If you’re a mother, as I am, it is difficult to get enough sleep and to fit exercise into the schedule.  Both sleep and exercise stimulate growth hormone, which promotes production of collagen and elastin to keep your skin taunt.  I think I’m going to go to bed now.
  • Makeup:  I think it’s the 11th commandment, “ Thou shalt not sleep with makeup on.”  Mineral makeup is the best to wear during the day and you must thoroughly cleanse your skin every night (and every morning.)  I like to use my Clarisonic brush before applying my favorite skin care products and gloMineral makeup will help prevent your pores from enlarging to the size of a parking garage.
  • Sleep face up:  When you sleep with your face pressed to the pillow, you develop skin lines on the side of your face.    We have to love our laugh lines and hate our frown lines, but cheek sleep lines?  The first time I saw a cheek sleep line on the side of my face, I thought; are you kidding me?  This beauty routine is getting harder.  Yep.  It took me about 8 months and a few pillows to train myself to sleep on my back.
  • If you forget everything else:  Apply skin nutrients to your skin starting from the thinnest product to the thickest.  Because UV light degrades products with vitamins A, C and E, use these products at night when they can do the most good; if using them in the morning, it’s another reason, besides aging and skin cancer, to use sunscreen or a day cream with sunscreen in it.

Remember the saying, “Skin sells.” Next time you go to buy the latest “Must-Have Hand Bag” take a look at vibrancy and health of your skin first!
