Chris Powell, besides being the star of the hit TV show, “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” is – for the record – the nicest guy on the planet! Although I had the opportunity to connect with Chris several years ago when he was assisting David Smith in almost every aspect of his dramatic 400 pound weight loss without surgery, I hadn’t talked to him since his show debuted in May 2011. I was honored to have the opportunity to catch up with Chris, to not only talk about weight loss, but also to ask him some personal questions. ( You’ll want to read my interview to find out why being a “Commitment Keeper” is so important!)
Di: Do your kids ever eat junk food? Or does Chris Powell’s kid’s carb cycle?
Chris: (laughs) No food is off limits. Heidi (his equally attractive and engaging wife) and I teach our kids about health. It’s all about education with kids. We want to teach our kids about being healthy without making them feel deprived.
(I was happy to hear that Chris’s kids had tasted Oreo’s!)
Di: Women’s Health reported that about 2/3 of dieters regain more weight than they lost after 4 or 5 years. David Smith was very public about regaining the weight you worked so hard to help him lose. Did the fact that David regained his weight, change the way you approach the people you are helping now?
Chris: With David, it was all about weight loss. I get the weight off people using the same strategy, however, my approach is so different- this is about transformation! Now we address the emotional and psychological side. I learned that for most people, it has nothing to do about weight loss. Each individual on the show has a therapist. For most people, it is years of broken promises. I teach people how to be a “commitment keeper.” Most, don’t keep commitments to themselves and I teach them how to build the foundation of keeping those commitments.
Di: I love the phrase, “Commitment Keeper!” That phrase is powerful! Maybe that should be your next book?
Chris: Ha, it is! It’s a phrase that my wife, Heidi, and I came up with together and she and I will be coming out with a book about it.
Di: That sounds so exciting! Your book, “Choose to Lose” – The 7 Day Carb Cycle Solution, is flying off the shelves. Your book shares your weight loss strategy?
Chris: It does, and Heidi and I will be talking about Carb Cycling on “The Dr. Oz. Show” on October 31st. The entire hour is about carb cycling. It was really fun!
(Okay, everyone remember to watch Dr. Oz on Halloween! This is one you won’t want to miss!)
Di: You are currently filming Season 3- How many months are you away from home?
Chris: I sat down and figured it out; I’m gone 9 months out of the year. It’s tough, I sometimes feel like I’m raising my kids through Skype.
Di: How many more years do you want to do the show?
Chris: As long as they need me to get the message out.
Di: It must be really tough on Heidi and the kids to have you gone so much?
Chris: It is, but Heidi is great and I feel like this is something that we are doing TOGETHER. Since Heidi is a fitness trainer, we introduced her to the show in Season 2. She was running a boot camp for the show participants in Scottsdale, and we incorporated it into the show. It’s a journey we are taking together – and that makes it so much better!
Di: That’s beautiful! It’s always fabulous to see really kind, generous people enjoy success….and you and Heidi are the best! I only wish you and Heidi more good things in the future. I know you are helping countless people; this is your mission- I’m glad the world has given you the stage to fulfill it!
Thank you Chris for taking the time to talk with me during your extremely busy filming schedule!
And remember….Beauty without virtue, is like a rose without a scent.
