Hair

Your Second Most Important Accessory

Just as your skin is the accessory that goes with you everywhere, so does your hair.  As with skin, hair probably isn’t as exciting as the “Latest Must-have Hand Bag.”  But second to skin, it is your MOST important fashion accessory.  Damaged, brittle hair can be very aging and can diminish an otherwise fabulous makeover.  Although it is estimated that we spend $50 billion a year on hair care in the United States, sometimes people get stuck in a rut buying the same products that are leaving their hair looking dry and flat.

The Mane Facts on Hair Care

  • A healthy lifestyle will lead to healthy hair:    High stress, smoking, and not eating nutritiously can lead to unhealthy hair.   When I had my last baby at the age of 42, and nursed him for 1 ½ years, I felt like he sucked every nutrient out of my body and my hair was literally falling out.  Throw a little sleep deprivation in there, and it was the perfect combination for lifeless hair.  Gotta love the post partum phase.  Thanks to my mane man, Cervando, and recommending products by Leonor Greyl, my hair is on its road to recovery.
  • Use a Natural Bristle Brush:  A natural bristle brush is softer and more flexible which means less damage to your hair.
  • Use a conditioner after shampooing:   It will moisten your hair, give it extra protection, add shine, reduce static, and make it easier to untangle.
  • Use a leave in conditioner:  A leave in conditioner on your hair is the equivalent of a moisturizer on your face.  Tonique Vivifiant by Leonor Greyl is a fabulous leave-in treatment spray to fight hair loss and improve hair vitality and Tonique Hydratant is a beautiful moisturizing leave-in treatment that works to strengthen and moisturize the driest hair types, giving your hair instant vitality.  It is 2Di4!
  • Wet hair:  When hair is wet, it is the most vulnerable.  Some people rub their hair dry with the same force they use waxing their floors (or car).  Your hair breaks easily when it is wet.

Product Ingredients Some People Like to Avoid and Why:

  • Silicone: Silicones can cause trouble for people who color their hair – and they don’t even realize it.  According to scientists, continual use of products that contain silicone create a barrier so you have to use higher levels of hydrogen peroxide and/or process the hair longer (hence- more damage) to achieve the desired color.  When I first stopped using products with silicone in it, I missed that instant smooth comb out.  But my hair color is lasting longer and my hair isn’t as flat because it is not being weighed down from the silicone.  My hair is also much easier to style.  Silicone – great for breast enhancement- maybe not for hair.
  • Sodium laureth sulfates and its close cousin sodium lauryl sulfate: These are highly irritating chemicals that can lead to skin damage and even reports of liver toxicity.  A report published in the Journal of The American College of Toxicology in 1983 showed that concentrations as low as 0.5% could cause irritation.  I’m not sure about the liver toxicity reports, but it doesn’t sound like the ideal product to massage onto your scalp.
  • Parabens: Parabens are used to prevent microbial growth and extend a products life.  A study published in 2004 (Darbre, in the Journal of Applied Toxicology) detected parabens in breast tumors.  However, the study left several questions unanswered.  For example, the study did not show that parabens cause cancer.  The FDA is continuing to evaluate the use of parabens in cosmetics- but currently there are no restrictions.  If the FDA determines that a health hazard exits, the agency will advise the public.  No Parabens has become a popular “buzz word” but it is still found in many products under the names: methylparaben, proply paraben or ethyl paraben.

So if your hair looks dry and dull, it may be time to skip the latest  “Must-Have Hand Bag,” and go for the Must-Have hair! The accessory that is always with you!
